Flag Day - June 14

Stars and Stripes USA Flag

In 1885, Bernard Cigrand was a 19-year old school teacher at Stony Hill School. He placed a small star flag on his desk and assigned essays to his students regarding the flag and its significance. This was the beginning of Cigrand's efforts to bring about national observance and recognition of Flag Day. On May 30, 1916 President Wilson issued a proclamation for a nation-wide observance of Flag Day. However, Flag Day did not become an official observance until August 1949, when President Truman signed the legislation proclaiming June 14th as Flag Day. All government offices in the USA display the Flag of the United States on Flag Day. All US residents are urged to observe Flag Day as the anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. Wave it proudly.
