Clean Birdhouses Each Spring

By Becky, Owner of Flags On A Stick | | 0 Comments

Ideally, birdhouses should be cleaned early each spring.  Cleaning helps remove bacteria and parasites, thus promoting a healthy environment for birds.

Seed & Song Birdhouse

  • Wear gardening gloves to keep your hands clean and safe. Open your birdhouse and remove all debris and nesting material. Use a plastic bag to dispose of debris.
  • Use a small brush and weak bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts warm water) to clean the inside, making sure to clean all corners and the entrance hole.
  • Rinse the birdhouse with clean water for several minutes to remove all traces of the bleach solution. Leave the birdhouse outside and dry in the sun for several hours. The sun will help thoroughly dry the inside to prevent mold and mildew, plus remove all traces of the bleach solution.
  • Reassemble your birdhouse, making sure all the hinges are secure. Be sure all ventilation holes are open and unobstructed.
